user profile service failed to logon

Hi,

When I boot up I get to the sign in page .
When I sign in I get the message: User Profile Service Failed To Logon and things go round in a loop, I can't get to the Start Menu.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

This is not a new error.

This error had been spotted all the way back to Windows NT. While I'll call it a corrupt profile and Microsoft discusses it at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 I hope you have a backup account to recover the files with.

Again, always keep a spare admin capable account for when this happens. There is no sign that Microsoft or any other company will repair corrupt profiles. All the articles have us move to a new account.

Since this issue has been around over a decade you begin to wonder how long till a nice fix will appear.

I am going to try the F8 key suggestion at Startup.

If that doesn't work I'll have to phone the man.

Hi,

I used the F8 key at startup top get to the safe mode part of the computer and from there I was able to roll the machine back to a date before the problem occurred and that has fixed the problem.

I'm posting this in the hope that it might help somebody else in the same situation.

I tried to fix a friend's computer tonight suffering from the above error message but the system wouldn't go into safe mode even after pressing the F8 as instructed. Any other suggestions? Could they have a virus which is blocking safe mode?

Malware damage, installing some incompatible software. Sadly the cause is "too many" to call it this or that.

Thanks, this worked for me as well.

To be specific, after entering safe mode, choose "Repair My Computer", then "System Restore"
