Free Anti-Virus Software Compatibility Issues

My friend has the Windows 7 operating system and was told that AVG would not be a good anti-virus software to install because it would interfere with Windows Defender.
She is new to computing and wouldn't no how to deal with incompatibility issues.
Can you suggest another free anti-virus software download that would be compatible with Windows 7?

Since AVG 9 has an anti-spyware component Windows Defender is turned off.

Here's the quick reason.

You'll want Antivirus, Antispyware, Firewall but you should only install ONE of each. If one product does two of these then you can see where some may get confused.

Don't think this is true.

Why not try Microsoft Security Essentials? Combines AV with Defender, and does a very decent job of protection. Runs without stealing a lot of system resources, and is also FREE.

If both AVG and Windows Defender are running in the background at the same time, then I could see there would be conflicts.

So, don't do that. Install AVG and let it run continuously in the background with it's anti-virus and anti-spyware components.

Open Windows Defender and goto Tools then Options. Under "Automatic Scanning" remove the tick. This removes any scheduled scans. Then scroll down to where it says, "Use real-time protection (recommended)". Remove that tick. Click Save to save the new settings.

Now you have AVG running all the time in the background, and Windows Defender just sits there, unused, until you run it to perform manual scans as a double check.
