Computers shut down immediately after Boot Up

I have 2 computers the first is a home built desktop, the second an HP 2140 Net Book, both running Win 7 Home Premium. Last week they both started to behave strangely.
On start up, the desktop appears as normal, and then immediately Windows automatically closes down. There is no BSOD or anything like that. It just goes through a perfectly ordinary shutdown only halting to warn that it is waiting for background running programs to close.
As this is happening on both machines I guess its safe to rule out hardware failure.
I dont recall installing any new programs recently, only regular MS Updates.
Ive tried doing a system restore but always get the Failed to complete error.
If I boot up in Safe Mode both machines work fine,
Can anyone offer any suggestions what may be the cause, and how I can fix it please?

Norton can block that. Research that on google.

removed Norton, then restored system to a time before the shutdown problem appeared, but this still hasn't sorted the problem. Do you, or any one else have any further suggestions? I really would like to avoid having to re format the drive and re install Windows.
Has any one else here encountered this problem recently?

But I was guessing about Norton (and appear to have guessed right.) Your posts leave out so much detail that I can't guess what next. It could be anything so keep writing and see if anyone has new ideas.

win7 installation source?

both machines having the same problem, it might be the win7 source disc is not a good copy.

Anything common to the machines?

Even if its the users, the clues here are very sparse but when you see troubles like this you often find the users are the same and their actions are the same so the machines tend to have the same troubles.

Sorted at last!!!

By un-installing and re-installing all 3rd party programs one at a time, I found that my machines don't like GFI Backup for some reason. I have completely removed the program and all is now well. I did re-install it again but the problem returned. As there are plenty of alternatives available, I don't think I'll try to find the reason it doesn't work for me.
