Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 7 Full Version

This may seem a bit confusing but here is what happened. My friend purchased a copy of the W7 upgrade. She had xp on her machine. I formated the hard drive and installed the w7 upgrade. After entering the key number, I was told that it was not accepted since I had to install a Full Version on an empty HD.
I told her to return the W7 upgrade which she did and they were nice
enought to exchange it for the Full Version. I thought I would just try to put in the KEY NUMBER from the full version over the upgrad I had installed previously. It would not take it.
Do I once again have to format the hd and start over with the full version so that it would accept the Key No. Is there another way this upgrade can be done withoug having to uninstall and format the W7 upgrade I already have on her machine with a 30 day warning since it is working very well:"?
Many Thanks
