Had to pay for my Windows 7 home premium recovery disk?

I bought an Acer this past weekend with Windows 7 home premium from Office Depot and I had to buy my recovery disks seperately.????? My system recovery and my Windows 7 disk were just copies that the store made. Is this common these days? I have not bought a computer in 8 years but 8 years ago, they came with my Windows Xp. I paid 30 dollars for something I thought that would come with the machine and not only that, I get bootlegged copies.????? I figured the manufacturer would put that disk into a the box.

Can someone please enlighten me?

It's all about reducing costs or pay as you go.

Or you opted to not make your own. HP, Acer and many others let you create your own after you boot the machine.

The problem with those store copies is not about bootlegs but I worry if they work. Why not make your own?

Im not sure how to do that. The store said they would take everything off that I didnt need and they would give me 3 disks to recover if needed. I have 2 recovery disks and windows 7 installation disk that are all copies. I am feeling a little weary about this.

You opted to not reveal the make and model or I missed it. Otherwise I might have supplied a link on how to create your own.

At the very least you should duplicate these disks just in case of loss.

Backup is something people tend to learn but can't be taught.

Acer AS5740-5780 15.6" Widescreen Notebook Computer With Intel Core i3-330M Processor with 4 gigs of ram and windows 7 premium home.

Like you said, I just learned about this.

Things were much more simple 8 years ago I must say.

Open the Acer eRecovery Management program
Click the burn disk button at the bottom
Click the create factory default disk button
Put a blank DVD in the drive when prompted and follow the remaining on screen instructions

I duplicate those for safety.

Bob is correct, you can make your own recovery disc in Windows 7, no need to purchase at the store: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-system-repair-disc.
