Windows 7 disaster

I installed Windows 7 two days ago on my HP desktop. It is a disaster! I want to remove it and return to the Window XP Media Center edition that came on the computer. It came preinstalled so I don not have a disk to reinstall it.
I did a Google.com search on how to remove Win 7 and it sounds very complicated.
I did not have any sound once I started using Win 7. I went to HP support and there was no new driver for the sound card. This is the 2nd day trying to use Win 7. I will be working on a website and POOF, I suddenly have a blank screen. I then have to shut down, reload and start over. I TRULY want to get rid of Windows 7.

Uninstall Windows 7

Yes, I ran the compatibility test on the Microsoft website. Everything checked out so I installed it on this computer. Except for lack of sound it worked OK yesterday. Today when I am viewing a website I suddenly get a blank screen. I have to do a complete restart to get IE to function; then POOF it disappears after about 5 minutes of using it and I am back to a blank screen.

Heading out on a road trip without a spare tire (or recovery media.)

ALL the HP's I have encountered let me make those recovery media but the awful truth is not everyone does. Here's TWO exits.

1. Get a new sound card. These are cheap (under 20)

2. Order the recovery media from HP.
Usually about 35 bucks but worth it. And since it almost always wipes the machine out this will be a good test of your backup system.

Bob, I appreciate your response. I can do without the sound on the computer but I surely cannot work with it quitting every few minutes.
I get a completely blank screen in the middle of whatever I am doing.

I will follow up on your suggestion to buy the cd recovery disk or I may buy a new computer. Just added 2 GB of memory in January so not decided which route to take.

Before you give up, try a repair install of Win 7.

Also try some other browser (Firefox, Chrome). What version of IE are you using?

And I'm guessing here be a forgotten driver or the sound card being enabled but no driver. I know my new hp d4999t and d5000t took a little more work to find motherboard drivers and a surprise you really do need an Intel RAID software installed.

Windows 7, just like all prior Windows is far from automatic on this. It's a shame after decades this was never resolved.

Thanks, I am going to 'sleep on my problem' tonight. I will make a decision tomorrow. I do have a new copy of Win XP but not the same version as what I had before I installed Win 7.

Here is some useful information on how to run a system recovery (including a startup repair): http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7. As for the driver issue- you can get drivers multiple ways, they are not always automatically updated: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly.

Tara. I appreciate your response. I will check out the link you posted for Microsoft. Unfortunately, people seem to think I am referring to IE 7 rather than the Windows 7 Operating system. At this point I am seriously considering buying a new computer.

Hi Betty,

I really hope you give Windows 7 a shot! I need to have more information about the complications you are facing in order to provide you the most help! The drivers are really a very common issue- they are a pain at first but once resolved Windows 7 is pretty intuitive and clean.

Prior to installing Windows 7 I would have recommended you create a repair disc for your previous OS.
At this point it would be useful to check your hardware compatibility (different from the upgrade advisor): http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx to find updated drivers or if you have to replace your soundcard. And another is to skip the recovery options, back up your data and reinstall Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7#section_7.

I hope this is helpful, keep us posted on your progress!

Tara, I went to the link you sent but I am not a 'techie' so I did not see anything that I thought applied to my situation.
Microsoft's print is blue and so dim that it is a strain on my eyes to try and read what is on the website.

Truthfully, I am not finding much to like about Windows 7 OS. Ir appears some of the changes were made just to make change. I cannot find File so that I can save items nor Edit so I can search a page.

No, I haven't even tried to install MS Office. I do't want to install any programs until I have this OS workind properly. I am referring to when you see and item and you want to save if on your desktop or Docurments so you can refer to it again or send it to someone as an attachment.

The option and location of "File" or "Save" completely depends on what program or application or browser etc is being used to view/edit/store the file.

Without knowing where you are seeing an item that you want to save it is kind of hard to give a solid answer...

find motherboard drivers on manufacturers website

I had same problem with my compaq pressario v 5000, I could find drivers on intels website with which syste is working finely. Suprisingly drivers were not available for win 7 on hp website
