Java as a browser plugin

What browser(s) are you using? I'd think the java version needs to match browser. There's a FF 64 bit (sort of) out there that I tried but ended up going back to 32 bit for now as it was rather awkward. As for java updates, you can usually find these run from msconfig. Look for something like "jusched". I'm fairly sure that's what triggers it but I turn that off.

I am using IE8 and when I downloaded it I choose windows x64, which I assume x64 means 64 bit. I have windows 7 64 bit. I have been searching with google and did find a few places that talked about having to have both versions 32 and 64, then using the 32 to make changes like the auto update. I am just not sure about doing that. Maybe someone will know. I need to get this right because I am going to download openoffice and it requires java. I have always turned off auto update and updated when I wanted to, of course this 64 bit stuff is new to me. Also it is not just a matter of stopping auto update but how would you make it update when you wanted to without a update tab. There is nothing to click on to update. Thanks for you reply

I didn't check to see if OO has a 64 bit available but it stands to reason that you'd need the proper java version for whatever you use. By default, java sets itself up to autoupdate...or so it has on my machines...but I turn it off. You can, however, launch it at will and update from there by locating the executable. It doesn't need to be in the control panel.

That link did help me out. But I discovered something. It looked like I needed both versions 32 and 64 bit. So I downloaded the 32 since I already had done the 64. Still no update tab. So I uninstalled both version and reinstalled just the 32 bit. Then I had the update tab. So I then installed the 64 bit and the update tab disappeared. There is only one icon for both versions under control panel. But I did find under the advance tab a JRE Auto-Download, is this auto update or what is this?

I do have win7 and java but I don't use IE as a rule...only for critical updates. I know that java's auto-update function runs from msconfig as I previously mentioned. Actually, I think it just checks for availability of updates at interval. The line in msconfig is jusched. If it's checked, it's running in the background checking for java updates. I don't use that. Occasionally some problem happens with java. I do updates manually.

Difference between 32 and 64 bit control panel

FYI, the 32-bit version has a tab Update where you can change the update settings (what to do, how often etc.) while the 64-bit version doesn't have that tab. On a 64-bit windows 7 since the explorer.exe (which the windows control panel uses to show you the various option) can only run in 64-bit mode you'll only see the 64-bit java panel that is without the update tab. To manage the update (only 32-bit version) you'll need to run the 32-bit javacpl.exe in Program Files (x86).

Go to c:\program files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin
Right-click on javacpl.exe.
Select Run as administrator
The Update tab should now appear.
