Delete all event logs at once in Windows 7

I've longed for the ability to clear all event logs with one click since Windows XP. It wasn't too bad in those days because there were only a hand full of event logs. Then came Vista, with a ton of them and a collection point for administrator events. It's a real pain in the butt to clear them all during trouble shooting as you have to go in to each source event log and clear it manually. I thought maybe Windows 7 would come with this feature but alas, I am not one of the thousands who can claim that Windows 7 was my idea.

So after much research, I found a little built in command line utility called wevtutil. go ahead, open a comman prompt and type wevtutil /? for more info.

So I put this text based batch file together to accomplish the task of clearing all event logs without saving. Simply cut/paste the text below in to a text file and save. Rename it from whatever.txt to whatever.bat, right click on it and select "run as administrator" and away it goes....

Would be nice to have a utility to do this or an option within the event viewer, but I guess this is the next best thing. I've not found anything else anywhere on the internet that does this. So I hope you all find it useful.

I'm left wondering how clearing out event logs, which are designed to AID in troubleshooting, somehow makes the process easier. You lose all the historical context of events leading up to a problem, which can be VITAL to figuring out the problem.

You should be able to create your own custom log views and filter out the noise you're not interested in. Why are you insisting on using an outmoded and less effective method when a better one is staring you right in the face? Take the time to learn how to properly use the revamped event viewer, and I think you'll look back one day and laugh about how you had to fumble around in the dark before.

With over 20 years experience, there comes a time to clear out the event logs. Yes, they are extremely valuable in troubleshooting and keeping a log, more so in a corporate environment. And yes of course you can create your own custom views to aggtregrate the information to your liking. And yes, occasionally it's nice to simply dump them all after making changes to view a nice clean log.

Your response is rather condensending and pretty close minded. If you have no need for such a feature then don't use. After all, the option to clear one log out at a time is built in and standard for all the seperate logs, this is just a script to clean house more efficiently..

Unless you take the time to customize the way your logs behave, it's very possible for them to stop recording events once they become full. And why anyone would want to hold on to all their event logs for an indefinite amount of time is beyond me (unless it's mandatory for regulation purposes) but on a home computer, check yourself and your attitude next time....

And I wasn't insisting on anything.

There is not a utility for such activity but it sounds you have found a work around that works for you. Unfortunately your solution is useless in windows 7 ultimate. All the custom views are left with all the stale old entries.
I suggest you revist the subject becaue the problem of infinitely expanding custom vew of log files is a real one

Well, probably 99% of people don't even know that the Event Log exists, so they aren't going to care about cleaning it out. The poor sod that they call to come fix their computer when they screw something up... THAT might be a different story. Work in IT long enough, and you quickly come to learn that people lie to try and cover their stupidity. "I didn't change anything" is one of the most common lies. Sometimes it is true, but the vast majority of the time you can translate that to, "I know it said DO NOT TOUCH, but it was red and shiny! I just couldn't help myself!"

The Event Logs can be a vital tool for the person called in to fix the system to reconstruct what happened.

If you want to flush your logs, that's your business. But trying to promote it as some kind of a good thing and adding in a little technical language will cause plenty of people to enter into what is lovingly referred to by some as Dummy Mode. Whereby people will believe/do pretty much anything you say.

Sure, there are some instances where flushing the logs is useful, but that pretty much doesn't apply to the average user. The sort of person who frequents these forums. The technically clueless, who have trouble working a toaster, and the Dilbert PHB type who are impressed by anything on glossy paper with lots of technical terms. THAT is the primary audience for CNet. People who have never even HEARD of a batch file, let alone be able to tell that is what you posted.

And I have no attitude except the one you are projecting onto my post. Maybe instead of lashing out at others, you should reflect upon these paranoid tendencies you seem to have.

Look, I make no assumptins about CNEt users, you're here, I'm here, I'm sure we're not the only two on all of CNet that understand my initial post. But you did come on and make it sound like I was pushing drugs on to unsuspecting children.

I simply made a very easy, not very creative or difficult batch file The hardest part (after finding the command to use) was writing it due to so many event logs.

As an IT professional, I found it useful for the rare times it could be useful and really just wanted to share with the community. I make no assumptions what the average user knows or doesn't know about their PC. And yes, I have had my fair share of nightmare users.

We all know people do stupid things to their computers but most of the time, if they don't understand what they are reading or what a batch file is, I think they'd ignore this or make a batch file that won't work and possibly ask questions here and maybe learn something. It's not like it can damage their system.

Me? I was pretty happy I got around to putting it in writing. I posted this same thing to technet and techrepublic. (memeber of both) and thought I'd share it here. I can asure you, no one complained (yet).

You? I felt you attack me in the first post with a response that was not very well thought out or professional. And your second response certainly confirms that you have some unresolved issues with me.

I posted to a public forum. If anyone has any questions, they can respond here or email me. I'd be happy to explain what a batch file is and why you might want to write some of your own for simpler tasks. I get a lot more enjoyment out of life helping people do things better or learning a better way to do things from others, not getting involved in a flame war on a cnet forum.

clearing out event logs

Since I was interested in cleaning out event logs on server 2008, and those event logs are different than for Windows 7, in a command prompt I merely performed:

wevtutil el > del_evt_logs.cmd

which gives all event logs for Windows Server 2008, then do a search and replace to insert the wevtutil cl at the beginning of each line, ending with quoting those lines with spaces in them.

I find it much easier to clean logs out periodically rather than keep too much junk for too long. If you are getting "red x's" or "yellow !'s" there will soon enough be many more of them for your review.

Thanks to the original poster, I think the trick is to keep them in manageable amounts.

There is an easy way to create the file.

If you use the command "wevtutil el>ClearAllWindows7EventLogsCommandFile.txt" it will create a list of all of the log files that are currently on your computer (and they vary according to what is loaded on the box). Then use a text editor that can search and replace on the end-of-line/paragraph character and replace it with a quote character followed by the end-of-line/paragraph character and "wevtutil.exe cl " and a closing quote character (in MS Word it would look like "^pwevtutil.exe cl ". That puts quotes around all of the log names and adds the command to clear the log in front. You do have to manually add the command to the first line of the the list. Then just rename it as a .cmd file and your good to go. Thanks for the idea though, saved me a hoop of time clearing the dang logs.

I use a similar cmd to clear the event logs all the time. Not for extra space or anything but for the simple fact that when you reboot anything in the event viewer is from that boot. I had to post a reply, couldn't help it. Same thing happened to me when posting in a forum not long ago. I was just trying to be helpful. happy I did notice the date of this post. I was wondering if you have any other cool and helpful cmd lines or tips. Thanks

Very helpful post. I have previously laboured long with clearing the custom viewer which collects and stores so much information from the day one installs Win 7 that it is useless if not cleared.
Two suggestions
Change "cut" to "copy" as in Explorer 9 64bit it won't "cut" and change the file type to "ini" not bat" as the latter will fire off before one has time to run as administrator

You are right and your solution is very good though it misses a couple of logs - no wonder there are so many.
If the custom view of the event log is not regularly cleaned out it is absolutely useless and in any days work there are hundreds of entries.

I found your batch file very useful to me. However, I do use it selectively, as in the Application and System logs.

Made it easier for me to make a change to a program, clear the Application and System logs, all from the desktop, reboot and check the logs without going through a ton of unrelated items.

It saved me time getting rid of that "SideBySide" error I had on every computer!

I have been working systematically to get rid of severl side by side errors. I'd be interested in how you are getting rid of them all. I have been able to eliminate several, but I've not found a solution to others. I use the batch file for the same purpose with out having to customize the event log...

to installing Windows Live Essentials.
By uninstalling the mail, tool bar, sync, sign-in, and leaving only the movie maker and photo gallery, I was able to rid the error.

However, I understand that on 64bit, the movie maker calls for a 32bit dll, which isn't there, but loads a correct one and runs, but shows the error.
Supposedly, MS knows this and says to disregard the error.

I saw those in my research but they aren't the ones I'm getting. I'm getting this error about Adobe Air. I was getting another about Adobe Designer which require I edit an xml file. I haven't seen amy side by side errors today, hopefully they are all gone now. My administrative events are just about clean. Only one more to go and I think it's one of those "ignore this error" events as well.Thanks for the response...

I, too, have run into some really "odd-ball" errors that seem to just zone-in from Outer Space and my best efforts are met with frustration.

The vast majority of the times, I usually find excellent and competent answers on sites like this one - for which I am eternally grateful.

One "trick" I discovered this way was a tool that Microsoft released called the "System Update Readiness Tool". Despite what the title says, this particular tool is useful for a whole host of other things as well,

As Microsoft's own KB article on this says, there are certain essential "system" related areas of the registry and the new "System Update Layer" built into everything from Windows Vista on forward that can become "inconsistent" (corrupted? damaged?) by the simple fact of downloading updates, or even the tremendously dangerous task of merely using a system on a day-by-day basis.

This tool (it calls itself a "hot-fix" when you run it), checks these areas, finds inconsistencies, and (if possible) attempts to repair them.

I have used this tool on systems that I received that were Virus Museums, where I had to surgically remove some of the vile beasties - thread by thread - carefully removing them from the Registry. Often, when done the system would run, but would have "issues". Running this tool cleaned things up nicely.

I recommend it as a way to make sure the critical system parts of the registry are consistent - even as a maintenance item - and especially if you have weirdo - odd-ball problems.

Re: Clearing logs periodically.

IMHO, I feel that periodically clearing logs is an important part of system housekeeping and general maintenance.

Additionally, I find that when I am chasing down a particular problem, clearing logs allows me to concentrate on what's happening right now without things being cluttered with a lot of (relatively) irrelevant entries.

It has also been my experience that when I want to run dcpromo - or one of the prerequisite utilities, having pristine logs is an absolute must! I clear logs, reboot the box(es) in question, look for errors, let them stew for a day or two, etc. Then re-clear logs before running the promotion once I am satisfied that everything is Four-Oh.

Far be it from me to tell anyone how to run their shop. If you like to periodically clear out the cruft, fine! Likewise, if you want to have entries in your logs that go back to the Dawn of Mankind, that's OK too. Though, (IMHO), if *I* were that interested in all those older log entries, I'd save-and-clear.

Try this - MUCH easier and works on Vista, 7 and SERVERS:

(from a command prompt, type)
for /f %x in ('wevtutil el') do wevtutil cl "%x"


Does all logs, one shot (even if new logs show up later) no editing clumsy batch files.

Great, now all we need is to figure out how to disable them... sure it can be disabled in services but due to the extremely specific nature of these logs I'm not sure if that would stop them all...

An even easier command line that does not "miss" any logs:

@for /f "delims=," %%i in ( 'wevtutil el' ) do wevtutil cl "%%i" >NUL 2>&1

Microsoft can create additional logs with spaces in their names (that delimits tokens in "for" loop by default), but we can trick them by telling command interpreter to use a delimiter that never can be in any log names. Now entire strings are always used as log names
