running too many processes

Hello,
I have just installed windows 7 and my laptop was running a little sluggish (even for windows) I opened up my task manager and see that im running 82 different processes! Windows 7 was supposed to get rid of all the fluff, now i have over 30 more things running. so my question is..

Is there a site i can go to that will tell me what each process is and if it is necessary for it to be running.

Thanks in advance for any help i can get with this.

I would start with Black Viper

Windows 7 is new, so information and guidance is still coming in, but Black Viper usually seems to be 'on the ball'. But make sure you research this properly before making any decisions what services and processes to halt.

Many Win 7 Processes will be started by Services, so I reckon that's a good place to start.

Just a point though, Win 7 was never designed specifically to reduce Processes. In fact that was highly unlikely because, as new features, new security measures, new graphic effects, and so on, are added, processes and services are bound to increase.

When I cranked up my first 7 machine, same thing. The next few days it got better as the indexes and more completed. My advice is to give it time before fiddling with it.

What fixed your performance?
You can use the speed and performance optimizer to stay on top of your programs- to keep your speed up (it's not a one time fix)!
