How have people found the XP compatibility mode, does it work without any glitches with old software?

You can still send your photos you just have to change your default email client. I use gmail and I set it up by looking in search for instruction on "how to set up a default email client".

Let us know when you connect your TV thru the media center- would love to hear about your experience! I am glad you are having a smooth transition to Windows 7.

Installed Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (W7) on my ASUS P5QC that was set up to multiboot Windows XP 64 bit, Windows XP, and windows vista 32 bit. I specified that I wanted to overwrite the Windows XP 64 bit partition and w7 completed the install without a hitch. It corrected the boot.ini file in XP and added itself as a selection in the boot manager.

So far so good. If my applications worked in vista they appear to work in w7. I'm still figuring out where everything is but I really miss the quick launch and quick access to the desktop from the quick launch area on the toolbar. I'm pretty sure there's a quick way to get to the desktop I just haven't figured it out yet. like a previous post suggested, I would like to have the quick launch with only applications that I use regularly available.

I once said in my software orientation workshops, "if you think the software should do it, it probably does - we just need to figure out (or ask help) where they put it" or in this case, how they think we should do it to be most effective with the software.

Also, I use a lot of speech to text and it looks like the speech recognition engine is the same one as in Vista. The improved quality of speech recognition in Vista over XP & Office was what kept me coming back to the Vista Partition.

After reading about zero day infections, and other bugs, and vulnerabilities, I "went rogue," and bought a MacBook.

I can kick myself every time I use the MacBook, for NOT BUYING ONE SOONER! After 25 years of all the hassles of Mickeysoft, I have finally have made the leap of faith.

I can go into the myriad of features that come with OS X, but I will only mention 2.
1) an upgrade costs $30, not $200

If a PC lasts me 3-5 years, that would be 2 or 3 upgrades of of the OS, at $200 a pop, that's $600-800. On the Mac side that's 60-80. Add that to the $700 price of a Windows laptop, and there's the cost of your MacBook.

2) built-in backup with Time Machine.

This has to be the most awesome backup utility. Accidentally delete a file, it's back there in Time Machine. Where's the backup utility in Windows?

All the bling, and eye candy are pretty much the same on both systems, so that is a non-issue.

However, as I work in a Microsoft shop, and Windows pays the bills, I will still be subject to what John C. Dvorak says is, "Windows 7 vodka and Microsoft Hangover," here: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2354446,00.asp

That being said, I may have to experience the hangover at work, that does not mean that I have to be subject to the same hangover at home. I prefer my hangovers to be alcohol induced.

It feels Awkward like a Knock Off item. Some like a cheap OSX.

I stick to Linux, no viruses, no Licenses to fuzz with, no defrag...

As a member of the outreachteam maybe You can advise me on how to resolve my Adobe Elements 8 and 7 problem with Windows 7...No company seems to be able to help.. when trying to share emailed photographs I get the message from windows 7 :-

Case 181276015 with Adobe has given NO SOULUTION.. Microsoft habe given no solution..by Teckgus have no solution.. the messgae that is sent to me we I try to send/share / email photos with Element 8 on Windows 7 is :-

"The actual message that comes up on sharing photemail or email on elements is

" There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. (which is frommy side to send pics to clients) Please install an email program or if one is installed, create an association in the Default Program control program "

So I would therefore be delighted to receiave a POSITIVE answer .. I look to the vast experience of computer experts who would be able to symplistically help me through this situation

Just to refresh your memory: this is a long-standing issue for this poster. His first post about it (in this thread) is http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.html?messageID=3174715&tag=commProfileMain;profileBot#3174715 and there already is a long discussion.

He has been told to set the default email client and how to do it. And he has been told to use attachments from the mail program. Now he seems to have a quite different problem: he can only mail to himself!

My impression is that this is hopeless. He can't be helped here. He needs local suppport by someone sitting next to him and instructing him how to do it.

If you feel that his latest post (the one I reply to) should be deleted for the (totally unfounded) accusation of 'spying' please alert it as offensive and I'll glad to do it.

This is a Microsoft bot. It occasionally checks if you have outlook installed. If it can't find a working version of outlook at the time of the check, you get this pop-up.
It does not matter how you tweak the registry to point at a valid email program, or resetting values, it only looks for a working version of outlook.
It does not matter which version of windows (XP, Vista & 7 all do it).
It would be nice if Microsoft would provide instructions for permanently removing this bot.

Congratz Windows 7, your not a total failure. But I'm sorry why do I have to pay money just cuz Vista was (is) a horrible OS, I understand that upgrades are what keep businesses alive and all, but seriously Huh. What gives??? I need to upgrade from your horrible flop of an OS to get one that works. I paid you for a mess, and got nothing in return. So great Windows 7 is Windows XP and Microsoft just made us all go through the same mess we did with Windows ME. What a load of stuff that is probably against the TOS. Are we gonna have to do this with every other Windows Operating System? If so who does Microsoft think we are? Wanna know who we are? We are consumers we want what we pay for to be worth the money we spent on it, not to completely for a lack of a better term suck. So go ahead run windows 7 it sucks less then Vista (what doesn't?), but why so. Are we spending loads of money to make someone rich and getting little in return, I'm not gonna go on a Linux, MAC, UNIX, or BSD rant I'm going as a person who wants stuff to be worth my while, if not why use it, and why waste your money on it. I am wondering whats the best antivirus program out there which runs best on win 7??

Not sure whether I really qualify as a "user." My main computer is still running a dual boot of Windows 2000 and XP Pro, but I've been running the 7 RC on a second box since July. It was good enough that I ordered the "Family Pack," but now I'm not really sure why. Probably because my wife hates the Vista on her laptop, so the "Family Pack" only cost a few dollars more than I was compelled to lay out, anyway.

For my own, current purposes, I don't like 7 as quite well as 2000, and about the same as XP. But I assume the day will come when I'll want or need to use apps that won't run on the older operating systems. That's the only reason I even have XP. So, I guess when that day comes, if I haven't become more proficient with Linux, I'll be hoping I can remember where I stashed that orange box.

I do not know what is the big hype about Win7. IMHO, seems that MS took the extra fluff that had Vista and made Win7. In the same token, all the removed fluff was part of the Legacy support that I think MS thought was not important.

I think MS is pretty much done with the present OS code and is reaching a point that has to be reinvented. But since there is a lot of intellectual property and copyrights, IMHO seems not to suit their business model of punishing/charging for using their codes.

If MS tries to run the Linux code, they open a huge backdoor for Open Source to get in. Perhaps the best thing for them as a business, is to run a dying and archaic platform to the end.

I still saying the best OS they ever made was Win 2000, beyond that was added more fluff and made it way worst with all the Media Integrations, IE and weaving all that within a Register that is hard to comprehend and fix when some goes really bad. Their file system NTFS is pretty much done and way passed they life cycle. However there are way better file systems already in the wild but they are Open Source.

What I see MS did...

Take XP, plush it up and call it Vista (that did not worked well) then, take Vista and remove all the Legacy support. So far, they have not done anything that is innovative new yet. Just updates/upgrades of stuff that is already made. A new GUI does not make an OS. If you want a new GUI, use Linux, at least you can install several Desktops Environments in one single machine.

In my home network, I downgraded all my MS systems to mundane task like playing YoVille in Facebook, since for some odd reason, does not like to play in Linux.
