Can't upgrade from vista home prem. to Win 7 Professional?

Why does me laptop tell me that I can upgrade to Windows 7 home premium and ultimate only? I am trying to put professional on it.

Check the upgrade matrix on Microsoft's site. You should have done this prior to purchasing. Would have saved you what's likely going to be a very expensive mistake, given you generally can't return opened software.

According to Microsoft's website

According to Microsoft's website, you have to do a clean install if you want to run Win7 Pro and you currently have Vista Home Premium.

You'll note that the Vista Home Premium and Win7 Pro intersection has the yellow star, which, according to the key, says that a clean install is required.

So, I don't know what you were looking at, but it's pretty clear cut as far as the official upgrade matrix is concerned.
