Win 7 defrag won't see my C drive any more

When I first loaded Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit) on my Dell Vostro 1320 notebook, everything was perfectly fine. Lately, the built-in defrag tool won't work because it doesn't show "C" drive (which is my boot drive) in the drive list any more.

Any thoughts?

As a side note, it might also be part of the same problem, but chkdsk won't run against the C drive either.

Any help is appreciated because I need to get my chkdsk running again as I've got drive errors that need to be fixed.

So far all involve registry cleaning. None have been fixed yet so I'm guessing the damage is deep.
