Calibration report using these settings: [see post below]

TV software/firmware version tested: 03.00.52

Below you'll find the settings I found best for viewing the LG 55LA8600 in a dim room via the HDMI input. Your settings may vary depending on source, room conditions, and personal preference. Check out the Picture settings and calibration FAQ for more information.

Calibration notes: Two picture settings, Movie and Cinema, vied for most-accurate pre-calibration. Both had similarly minus-blue, plus-red grayscales, but Movie had the light output advantage while gama on Expert 1 was better.

As usual Expert offered the widest array of picture adjustment options, so I used that mode for my calibration. The first step was determining which local dimming setting to use. I settled on Low because it seemed to introduce the least blooming and fluctuations, with slightly better shadow detail than Medium. High was the most aggressive and plagued by flucuations, while Off delivered terribly washed-out black levels.

The two-point grayscale controls worked very well, getting me exceedingly close to my targets without much fuss. Gamma was still an issue at the brighter end of the scale, however, and unfortunately the multipoint control didn't work well to fix it. The system was relatively inconsistent at changing gamma at various light levels and from one measurement to the next. For example, raising the controls at the higher end just as often lowered light output as increased it. As a result I decided to forgo the multipoint controls, zeroing them all out, and sticking with my original 2-point calibration.

The color management system worked well enough, with the all-too-usual exception of controls for blue, which proved ineffective.
