Below you'll find the settings I found best for viewing the Toshiba 50L2300U in a dim room via the HDMI input. Your settings may vary depending on source, room conditions, and personal preference. Check out the Picture settings and calibration FAQ for more information.

Calibration notes: The Movie mode was the most accurate prior to calibration, but it was still pretty terrible, with a severely minus-blue grayscale and light gamma.

The first decision I made, as usual with Toshiba, was what DynalIght setting to use. I settled on Low since it provided the best balance of shadow detail and black levels. High produced even deeper black levels, but shadows were much too dark and gamma also suffered severely.

Grayscale calibration went better than expected given the simple gain-only controls; of course if I has bias/cut controls as well it would have been better. The CMS also worked well to get all of the colors to respectable error levels, with the non unusual exception of blue, for which the controls had no cure.

I also experienced an unprecedented strange anomaly when measuring gamma. The measurements in the CalMan report (1.97) were significantly different than what I measured in a standard 10-point grayscale run (2.2). I can't explain it, but I trust the chart's results more so that's what I ended up reporting in the Geek Box.
