Epson 9700 UB Blacks too black

I know, right? When I signed up for the ultra-black, I thought it just meant better blacks, not all black. I'm specifically seeing issues in night scenes. When I watch the same content on my HDTV, you can see everything that's going on. When I watch on my 9700 UB, Everything is so dark that I can't distinguish anything. I watch in a light controlled environment with almost no ambient light. Settings are set to default. I have tried messing with the gamma and brightness, but neither have helped. Any advice?
