TV Calibration

I am getting ready to buy a Samsung UN55B7100. I am having the retail store mount it on the wall. They want an additional $300.00 to calibrate the TV. Is it necessary to calibrate this TV considering I am already paying 3K for it? Thanks.

calibration DVD

I came across a HDTV calibration dvd that you can use to calibrate your tv's picture setting and audio. Found it at BB it was very helpful and works great!

Quickie calibration

The answer is YES, all sets should be properly calibrated. But, if you are not in a controlled environment (i.e. custom built home theater) you can do a pretty good job with calibration disc on your own. All THX DVDs have a calibration tool on them (think: Star Wars discs) It's called THX Optimizer and it's easy to follow, and easy to tweak (although not always easy to find in the menus)

Professional calibration is well worth the money. The store will probably not use a calibraion device (a $5000 tool), so just do what they do, and use a disc.

We do use the calibration tool. We fully calibrate the inputs to the lighting of the room and to the device. I know exactly what they are doing but still paid for them to do it more so cause a optimizing disk doesn't do it. From first hand experience going in and changing how a tv defines a color will be well worth the $150 Best Buy charges for calibration. The only downside is they only do 2 inputs for $150.
