Filtering messages in Windows Live Mail

Is there a way to filter messages into folders when the mail is retrieved? If there is, I haven't found it. If anyone knows how to do this, I would appreciate the help.

It's different though depending on which version of Windows you're using, and I'm afraid you neglected to mention that. In Windows 7, you click the Folders tab, then click Message Rules. Once you get into Message Rules, it works the same way it did in Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista). To create the folders, you right-click the account name or whatever folder you want to make subfolders for, then click New Folder.

Thank you so much. I've tried it with one of my Yahoo groups and actually sent a message to the group. Shortly after, that reply went where I wanted it to go. I knew there had to be a way but just couldn't find it. I appreciate your quick response.

I'm glad that did it for you. If the MS executives knew what they were doing, they should've stopped that ribbon foolishness in its tracks. All it did was to confuse a lot of folks and make millions have to reinvent the wheel. I'm still trying to find things in Word because of it. Now they've done it again with Windows 8. Yuck! I used to be a huge fan of MS, but starting this year I really have to wonder about them.

Doesn't work for me

I followed your path, but it doesn't work for me. Once I have gone into message rules and set the guidelines, then click on "Move it to the (fill in the blank) folder." But when I click on that blank to move it to the correct folder, the only options I get are those listed "storage folders." It doesn't give me the option to move it to the Inbox, where my newly created folder for it is.
Is it just something wrong with my machine? Or is there a trick I'm not discovering?

By the way, I have Windows 7, on a relatively new machine (one year), and my version of Windows Live Mail is up to date as of this past weekend.

They usually are new to Live having used Outlook Express that did this.

Did you see if Thunderbird can be used?

Thanks. I had Thunderbird before Windows Live Mail on another computer. One day it froze and I haven't used it since. I'm still trying to get all my messages off it. However I did filter messages on Thunderbird and also Eudora before it.
