Live mail unable to send with any attachments

I am able to receive mail okay and send mail without attachments. This is a brand new Win 7/64 home system using Office 2000 (no outlook); we have installed only live mail from Windows Live Essentials; AVG 2012 is the AV.

However when I try to send with any attachments eg *.doc, or *.xls, I get the following message after about 3-4 mins

Error
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this includes server problems, network problems or a long period of inactivity.



The file in question is closed,

Have called TT there is no reason for this at their end.

What I would try:
- set AVG to NOT check outgoing mails. Might make a difference.
- another email client, like Thunderbird (free from Mozilla).

Does it also happen with a simple text file (*.txt) or a picture (*.jpg)? A text file shouldn't be handled by AVG.

Thank you for providing me with your suggestions.

1) AVG is already configured not to check outgoing emails.
2) Both txt and jpg files are going through okay - just tested.

What happens if you cheat a little bit? Rename your .docx document to .jpg or .txt and send it to yourself. Receive it, save the attachment and rename back to .docx.
If that works, you have a temporary work-around, but - alas - the receiver will have to do that same rename. That's not nice.

The next thing to try is to totally uninstal AVG. If it works OK then, it clearly is related to AVG. Then you can post the problem on our AVG forum; it's visited regularly by AVG staff. Or you can just conclude that AVG isn't the program for you and install another antivirus.
