Vista Windows Update Code errors 80280006, 80280007

-.- well, I'm a newbie to this so I'm not quite sure what my problem is nevermind how to solve it. Hopefully, you'll know what I'm trying to say.

I recently tried to install Windows Live Essentials 11 but came up with some problems. Mainly, error codes 80280006 and 80280007. I also found that some programs had uninstalled themselves, or had key components missing e.g. opera, google chrome, mozilla, divx, vlc to name a few. I'm not sure which happened first, because prior to that I hadn't used my computer in a while, being busy with other things.

So my problem is that I can't install Windows Messenger because it tells me constantly that I have already installed a newer version, rendering the messenger I'm attempting to install obsolete, and when I try to remove any of the windows messenger that I have, I turn up with...nothing. Apparently, Windows Live Messenger is not on my computer. Obviously, I'm looking in the wrong place, so please tell me where I should look for this phantom messenger.

Have I said I'm a newbie? Yes, I have. If you have solutions please put them in very simplistic, non-jargonistic terms. Anything else is beyond me. Thank you for your time.

Please understand me.
