Dell 1737 weird problems, need a solution

So, I am attempting to fix a friend of mines laptop. A dell 1737, that she had dropped. I have replaced the screen backing, and the power on button terminal and cables. Before attempting these repairs the unit was unable to start via the power button. After an investigation on the old power button, there was a broken wire and some minimal corrosion, so I figured replacing that would solve my problems. Wrong. The laptop still will not fire up on its own. And even odder yet, when the battery isn't plugged in, and just after I plug in the ac adapter to the unit, it attempts to power on for 6-8 seconds before it simply dies.
Any suggestions on what to replace? Trying to do it as cheap as possible.
