Some progress... I found that I had some time left with Dell so I called... They had me do a few things which did not isolate the problem completely. Finally, this AM I found the white light on even with the computer unplugged... The problem was a new hub (being a "minor" device, I forgot to mention I had added recently). The power from the hub was keeping the white light on.... I don't know if there are hubs which isolate the computer from their own generated power.... I still have outstanding problems but will maybe open a new thread to talk about these. Meanwhile, the Dell rep who thought that it was my power strip that was somehow preventing the computer from completely shutting down said that she will call back. I will tell her about this as well as additional problems.
