Dell Inspiron 1501 No Sound

After many hours of trying to resolve the problem I've narrowed it down. The icon showing the speaker has a red X through it and at start up I get a message saying I need to reinstall my IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver. So I said yes. After trying to reinstall the driver it comes up with a message saying a device attached to the system in not functioning so it cannot reinstall the driver. HELP please and thanks.

Without the OS I can't comment about a common oversight. Which one?

The one when we install XP and must install MS UAA after the motherboard drivers but before the sound driver.

I also wonder if that other item called Dell Quickset was forgotten.

Hi and sorry. It's running Vista 32 bit.

Dell Quickset was run but everything passed.

Then Dell's quickset.

However if the reason for the install was the sound was lost, it's possible the sound died.
