DELL INSPIRON 9100 BLACK SCREEN

I have an Inspiron 9100 laptop. Last July I upgraded the hard drive and the memory. I have had several problems and had to reinstall windows twice. After reinstalling windows a few days ago, the laaptop was running fine until a windows update to service pack 3. After the required reboot, I got a message that the ntoskrnl.exe file was missing or corrupted. I used the recovery disk to reinstall the file, got a message that the file was successfully expanded. However, when I rebooted, after the dell logo screen loads, I get a black screen. I ran chkdsk /r and it said 1 or more errors had been detected and fixed, but still the black screen. Any suggestions? Thanks, Pete.
