Dell Latitude D610 - Upgrade or not.

Hey all!
If there's a thread as such already, I apologize. Feel free to close/delete if so.
Okay, folks. I have a used Dell Latitude D610. I got it from my mom's company awhile back, and they couldn't remember where all the software was. Which is fine by me. My problem now is, is that the screen is painfully dark compared to my Dell Precision M4400. I'd love to update this laptop to the newest of everything. Just I don't know where to begin and what is even possible to upgrade. I'd live to change the XP that is already on here to Windows 7 Ultimate like my new Dell. I'll simply list down my questions:
What should I be aware of if or when I want to upgrade the graphic card? Is it possible?
Would that help with getting screen vibrance?
My cousin regularly uses Second Life here, and always has to keep the settings low in order for the program to stay running. Any recommendations as to what needs to be swapped out for her to use a higher setting?
And finally;
Do I need to get the parts from only Dell or could I use stuff from other places? (The guarantee of this laptop ran out already in 2006)
