My Hard Drive making clicking noise!!

I have a Dell XPS 410 desktop with Windows XP. I had to reformat it and reinstall Windows. Now, every time I do anything on this computer, the hard drive makes a clicking noise, then it freezes for a few seconds. Sometimes, I'll even get a Blue screen! and I have to shut down completely. Can anyone tell me why my hard drive is suddenly doing this?? Granted, the computer is a few yrs old, and I've had problems re-installing Windows XP and all the updates, but why would the hard drive start doing this now?

I don't have that answer. But given how cheap hard drives are, I'd replace it and move on.

It's dying

More than likely the clicking will start lasting longer and soon at boot time it will only click and that will be it. If you have any data on it, I would back it up a.s.a.p. and start shopping for a new one.

I was really afraid of that. My son said the same thing, but I had to be sure. Especially since I just went thru the whole reformatting thing and re-installing Windows and all the updates. GAH! What a bother!!
