Bios Problem in NEW Studio 15

I purchased a Studio 15 and it came with a bug. It shuts down all on it's own at odd intervals. Checked with the Dell site and they say that it needs a bios update. Well, they give instructions on the site for doing this(I have already downloaded the bios update), but everything I know says 'Don't touch the bios," so I'm afraid to do what they tell me to do and I wonder if they shouldn't fix it anyway as it is a new machine. They warrantee only hardware...not software and I think this would qualify as a software issue...right?
Still, they sent me a laptop with a bug in it which shouldn't BE!! Out of the box, it didnt' work right!! Of course, I put off dealing iwth it, so now the laptop is 2 months old (I've been just turning it back on when it dies.) and i'd like to fix it!! HELP!!
