My granddaugther just got a dell laptop for her birthday. An account named RA media server showed up afew days after it was set up and took over as an administator account with a password. We can no longer install anything on the computer. Research of RA media server revealed that the account came from dell which had remote access. A call to dell support said they would fix the account but it would require a $229 software service contract. The problem can be fixed by reinstaling windows and turning off dell remote access but I am sure that dell makes alot of money by basically hijacking their own computers and then charging people to fix it. Never deal with thieves.

http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19252460.aspx and others find they can fix that in 10 minutes. But that's not the point.

Maybe it's Windows at fault here. Dell only supports their stuff and for software like Windows you didn't know that that was not freely supported and feel burned about it.

Have you considered the Apple?

It's not Windows fault at all here.

It's 95% Dell's fault for hijacking 'Remote Administration' (which it left on by default), then apparently holding it's customers to ransom, and 5% the user for not turning off Remote Administration, Remote Registry and Remote desktop and any other Service or process that allows Remote control of their computer on Day 1 of ownership.
Go to www.blackviper.com, read up and lock it all down!

Great site.

Yes it is Microsoft's fault. This OS needs so much help that the makers put in remote access for buyers that will not learn Windows. You see what could have been an easy change stump the Windows users.

There is a big ECO-SYSTEM built around supporting Windows. Here's the bottom line. If you supplied the machine without Remote Access about half the owners would be in deep trouble. The other half may be like you and want it gone.

Most of the folk in the second half can fix this and those that can't may find these forums and a little help.

I agree. I will never buy Dell again. I was told a pack of lies from the guy in India. He did nothing I asked with regards to Microsoft Office and Vista. Ensured me I wouldn't get Vista and I did and the crappy almost useless Home version instead of Microsoft Office. I will never buy from Dell again. Or listen to the friend who said they were OK.

I agree 100 percent one should not buy a Dell computer. I have experienced many problems during the past year and continued to so.

Warning: Avoid the hired technicians in India, Phillipines, and Mexico, they will attempt to sell you a deal that is worthless. Question: What happened to the Americans with whom one could converse in English? I surely miss them.
