Dell D610 problems with PCMCIA and Wireless Lan adapters

I have a Dell Latitude D610 with Windows XP Professional SP2, the wireless lan stopped working. I thought it was the card so I took it out and just had a wired connection for a while. I then bought a PCMCIA card to get a wireless connection but I couldn't get it to work. I did not have any PCMCIA adapters listed on the device manager. I downloaded the drivers from Dell and my computer recognized the PCMCIA adapters until I rebooted my computer. Then they were gone. I decided to do a fresh install of Windows XP, download all the drivers from DELL and see if that would help. I could see the adapter listed in the device manager but when I installed the wireless card adapter drivers, the PCMCIA adapter disappeared from the device manager again. I've done this procedure about 3 times now (fresh install and drivers) but it keeps happening. I'm not sure if it's my motherboard that's having the problem or I don't have the right drivers. I think this is why the wireless lan stopped working because the wireless card I took out the computer, I put it in another computer and it is working great. I also tried Knoppix and it does recognize my PCMCIA adapter, so I'm stuck and I don't know what to do anymore, so any help out there will be greatly appreciated.
