I ran into the same exact problem when I was trying to play media from my PC through the Mediashare application on my DVR. Mediashare only plays mpeg2 and mpeg3 files, but the videos and music on my PC are in all sorts of formats.
I purchased the Serviio media server which solved this problem by transcoding (converting to correct format as it plays) media from my PC so it will play through Mediashare.
On my Samsung Smart TV, I can now play all the videos on my PC, or any networked device, through Serviio. For example, I put all my movie videos on a USB drive attached to my WDLive TV media player. When I wish to play a video from this device on my TV, I can either select the device as the source, or select Serviio as the source (the TV automatically finds all DLNA servers running on network), and select the video from there.
I do not recommend trying to play music or videos directly from the source (like a usb drive attached to TV) unless they are in the exact format supported by the TV.
