8000 Series TV Picture Quality

I have had a UN65ES8000 for 3 weeks, connected to a new DirecTV HR34 through an AV receiver via HDMI 1.4.

I have the TV set up per the CNET review. Most of the time the picture quality is OK (not extraordinary) but often the entire screen is washed out and bright until a scene change.

I selected this model because of the extraordinary picture quality on my LN52B750U1F.

Has anyone had similar issues? Any advice?

I've only viewed a minute or two of a theatrical Blu-ray title, so I can't answer with certainty.

After my posting, I ran the Disney Blu-ray WOW Calibrations, both basic and advanced. Every test showed the TV already properly set up. The only change I made was to remove the default overscan.

My DirecTV 'Genie' architecture, HR34 DVR with C31 slaves, is widely regarded as a work-in-progress, so it might be the culprit.

Also, both the DirecTV and Blu-ray video is switched through an Onkyo TX-SR313 AV Receiver. I wonder if the Onkyo is somehow falsely signalling 3D content, with its higher brightness?

Are others complaining about intermittent wash-out?

Hi drorb,

So what I'm seeing you say is that it's almost exclusively the DirecTV that you're basing the picture description on. Since you have 2 devices in between, the STB and receiver, I'm going suggest you test it somewhat by removing the products in between, and if the problem continues, you can feel assured the receiver isn't part of the equation.

Then you can test further by trying some Blu-ray movies with just the Blu-ray connected directly to see if it's the TV or the STB.

Let me know what your results are.
