How do I connect a Galaxy Nexus to KIES?

I need to do a firmware upgrade on my new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and the Samsung support person told me to download the KIES software from their site. I did this, and installed it. When I connect my phone, the software never detects it. I have gone through the process to debug the connection issue,however the software never finds the phone. Does anybody know what I need to do?

I use another PC. If you want to work on your PC I suggest a forum that discusses fixing Windows and PC issues.

I am encountering folk that think Samsung should fix their PCs. So far this has yet to happen.
