Samsung forum: my 58c8000 plasma runs very very hot....

I see in the manual it calls for 4 inches minimum clearance on all sides. You can guess why.

What's interesting is that no where on the Samsung.com site was the Watts listed. I did see a sly attempt to avoid the question but at 58 inches my guess is it's the usual 500 to 1000 Watt consumption.

Did you put a Watt meter on this?

its not for me to put a watt meter...i am a customer who purchased a tv that cost 2779$. I paid for it to enjoy it, not to play the technician looking for faults or defects.
An interesting note ,the four inches is not for clearance behind the tv, but from some enclosed furniture....otherwise they would not try to sell their special kit to attach to a wall very much like a picture frame (as close as 2 cm from the wall says the brochure). This kit was well over $150 when i purchased the tv. I did not buy it. I paid over 350$ to have the wall prepared properly to recieve it...now it's been sitting on a stand.
Furthermore, if you look closely at their brochure(of which i have 3 different copies) you see picture after picture of tv's placed directly to the wall with little or no clearance.

And I found it very odd the Watts or power usage was not to be found. I'm a little more technical as I design electronics, write firmware and more. So one of the neat little things I have is a P3 Watt Meter when I want to know how much something draws.

Call it in and ask them how many Watts. It can answer so much as I can do a little conversion to BTUs and guess at the temperature rise.

That particular model pulls in 180 watts. The information to that effect is right next to the model and serial number information on the back.

Plasma TVs can run hot up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit and in some situations slightly over 100 degrees Fahrenheit - especially if they have been on for a number of hours. This is normal for a Plasma TV.

If you smell anything emitting from the TV, turn the TV off, and use a can of air on the ventilation holes on the back of the TV. After getting any excess dust off of the TV, the smell should dissapate.

Please add that to the web site. It's absent in the site and the user manual and I see no reason to omit that detail.

Is heat a possible cause for the numerous cracked screens we hear so much about on these forums.....and can i add a couple of small usb fans behind the tv to keep the heat down or would it not make much difference?
Also ,if the SAMSUNG tech sees this, can you please answer my second concern which you will see at the start of this thread?

My bet is that glass will crack just like it has for centuries.

This issue was rare in the CRT days because of the sheer heft of the glass. On top of that the makers learned to add a little Pb and more to glass.

I wish I had an authoritative answer here but my Mechanical Engineer friends seem to think it's not specific to the makers but a limitation of the design. As you thin the glass and possibly lose control of the glass material or "recipe" like we see in many overseas production lines, my bet is this will continue to be a thorn in the industry's side.

The red sparkles you mentioned; are they coming from more than one source? By your description, it sounds like it's coming from only your receiver.

no they are not from the BELL receiver only ....also happens on PS3 video console. I use ULTRALINKS ultra flat hdmi cables that support 3D. I've never had this problem before. I mentioned the receiver because I can reproduce this effect almost every time. Is there a setting I can use to diminish this effect..... what about usb fans behind the tv?

After talking with our product specialist with this product, he said that there are a number of causes that could result in the sparkler effect you describe. Unfortunately, the only way to determine which one is to have someone physically working with it. Which means we'd have to set you up for service. As far as fans go, any circulation of air will help, of course. I've never tried it, so I don't know how much of a difference it'll make. Perhaps, someone else may have an experience or two to share.
