It was a committee design where the studios could roll out new protection schemes and the players would have to be updated to play a new release.

When you encounter a title that does not play you look for updates for the player and if not, call it in to report the non-working title.

There's a reason why the PS3 works more than others. Take a look at the major BluRay patent holder. What name pops up?
