SmartTV, not that smart...

Ok, here's the deal.

I would call a piece of technology smarter, only if it improves the way I use technology.

In the case of TVs, the primary use, I myself personally chose, is as a monitor/screen to stream contents of my PC/Laptop/.

Right now my laptop is connected to my tv, and streams movies, games, music, etc using it as a huge quality monitor.

I gathered information about SmartTVs from known resellers, Googled it for days now, and I couldn't find one feature I would call smart.

Example:

Smart tvs can connect to internet. So what? My laptop is already connected. And I can stream anything I want from youtube to hulu, or whatever it is I want to stream.

Don't need a TV with internet to stream anything.

aaand that's it. That's the only features I could find.

The remaining features are screening features which have nothing to do with "Smart". 800hz, 3D, etc, cool, but that has nothing to do with smart.

So what would I call a TV smart?

Here it is:

If my TV could stream pc/tablet/phone contents wirlessely, with hdmi quality, if it could be controlled from the pc, or if it could even connect to the phone to stream communications, then I would call that TV smart.

Until then, I refuse to buy 3rd, 4th, 292nd party softwares or hardwares to use these basic features.

But really, it's lame to keep repeating over and over (specially sellers), that the smart tv can stream youtube. Any smartphone can do it already.

Look back just 2 years and see that they had HDTVs but little else. Now that CPUs and such are much cheaper they pack in apps and more.

So, for the "TV" industry and makers this stuff has never been so "smart."

Notice that #8 is television?

As someone rightly said "That's not a good sign."

Not all the "samrt" TVs are the same.

LG cinema 3D smart TV has a magic remote which is similar as a mouse. It also has Smart Share / Smart Share Plus functioin which provides:

Besides, you can even chat or network with your friends while keeping your eyes on TV.

If all this stuff doesn't seem all that beneficial to you, dont get a smart TV.

R. Proffitt, Whenever there is a new tech trend, there will always be a discussion. Well, at least this is the motivation to push those companies enhance their new technologies.

These companies are way behind. Just look at the web browser they offer. Not one can display for example Hulu.com. Most have terrible or no keyboards.

What I'm hearing is the consumers were expecting the PC experience. It falls very short.

For now, pay for a great picture and not for the work in progress.

They may lack hardware keyboard but most smart TVs have onscreen keyboard (which is how majority of smart phones work anyway)
Again, the new tech trends will always take a little time to get accustomed to and these companies know that too. This probably was what motivated LG to come up with the magic remote and I say it's perfect for a smart TV. Since TV screen is too big to become a touch screen, point and click is the best way to go.

Samsung has a remote control app for some models. It is good but then again I find it to challenge some in the networking setup.

No audio when tv is connected to laptop-- very frustrated

I agree with you that a smartTV is not worth the money, but I've just been recommended to get the smartTV so the audio will work when I connect my macbook to the TV. I just bought the 55" LED Samsung, and when connected to my laptop, the video works, but the audio doesn't. I used a Y cable for the audio, and it still no sound. I don't want to buy a smartTV, so is there anything else I can do? What other Samsung TVs have a DVI audio input?? Please help!

DVI does NOT carry audio!

Rather than go over this area why not use some Apple adapter to HDMI?

If you insist on DVI then you have to get out the manual to the TV and see where to put in the audio. It will not be "DVI".

My 2 Cents and WD Live

I've been reading alot of these forums since I'm in the market for a new TV. Others may have read my post on other forums about my search for a good TV.

I think this thread and others helped me make up my mind not to buy s "Smart TV".

But I don't want to make a comment that might help some people. Buy a WDLive to watch movies on Netflix or movie files from your home computer. I bought one last year and it was well worth the $100. The remote is good enough too. Google the WDLive if you don't know what it is. There is not need to buy a TV that will access the net, just buy WDLive.
