PS51D8000 and NAS server

Hello everyone,
It's my first post here, so please be kind. wink

I want to buy a NAS server with DLNA, but before I do this I want to check which one is working with PS51D8000. I don't have great experience with this TV with regards to its various network functions and cooperation with periferal devices. First, connecting an USB hard drive was not as easy as it should be and Samsung documentation is a joke, finally I found one drive that works! Then, when I tried DLNA servers on PCs in my home network I spent a lot of time before I found Servio.

Now I want a dedicated NAS box that connects to my home network and from which I can access movies/music/photos via DLNA. Please let me know which one is working.

Any NAS box will do

Since your just connecting your NAS box to your home network and using Serviio on your PC as your DLNA server to read files from your NAS and stream them to your TV, then any decent NAS box will be fine (does not need DLNA inside it). There's no compability problems between your NAS and your TV since they are not talking DLNA together. Serviio and your TV are talking DLNA together.

Thanks Andy.

I probably was not precise enough. I managed to get Servio working on my PC and I know I can configure it to share files from other drives (in the PC and in the network). However, by adding DLNA enabled NAS I want to make it independent from operation of my PC running Servio.

In the scenario you suggest I need to keep switched on the NAS and the PC running Servio. I want a solution in which only the NAS will be switched on and I (and especially the kids) can access files on the NAS from the TV. (This way the kids don't have to play with my computer.)

Understand. I always have my PC and my NAS box running. I don't have any recommendations for a standalone NAS acting as a DLNA server since (in my tests a year ago) they were so poor and made DLNA streaming a terrible experience. DLNA firmware inside NAS drives don't transcode your incompatible files, don't have album/movie artwork, don't get metadata from the web, don't have playlists, don't have parental control, etc. Software DLNA servers do - at least mine does, Mezzmo (not sure about Serviio). Once your software media server is set up on your PC (i.e. you've added/organized your files), there's nothing else to do but leave your PC turned on. Software media servers usually run as a Windows service and run at startup of your computer. Your kids shouldn't have to touch it.

I tried DLNA many times over the past years and now have had enough. I no longer try. It's pretty junky and limited because it's a LCD (lowest common denominator) solution.

Try to get a demo of any of the Google TV boxes and you'll see a better way.
