Samsung forum: Samsung DLP White Dots

I got the same story from their ECR rep. Normal wear and tear my @$$. I had a Mitsubishi before I got my Samsung 72" DLP model HL72A650C1FXZA. That Mitsubishi played great for MORE than 10 years before it had any issues. Now just months past the 3 year mark with my Samsung I get about a dozen white dots on the screen that won't go away? So my $2400 purchase is crap after 3 years? Really Samsung? Not cool! To fix it I am looking at a $200-$300 replacement DLP chip PLUS labor? This is bull you know what. How can they replace some DLP chips as defective and not all of them?

I called and chatted with several reps and got no where. My ticket number is LTK56402468792X and my case number is 5105038887. If I have to pay for this repair after only 3 years of service... I won't ever be buying Samsung again. When are those Apple iTVs coming out anyway? That will be my next set.

I can only shake my head at the tech trying to push this under the rug. If you call Samsung they will tell you that their TVs are made to last about 5 years. Normal wear and tear on their TVs is 5 years.

This is a sign of a company using poor quality components. Samsung in the past was interested in quality and built a company from that. The folks in power at samsung now place a greater importance in profit now and less, much less, on quality.

I have never had a TV that needed anything before the 12 year point..... never.

I have posted about this issue and samsung's response on quite a few boards now. They no longer meet my minimal requirements for quality. I will not be buying any other samsung product in the future.

The CNET Home audio and video forum. We can discuss that without exception, all the names I see are now 5 year designs. It not they won't last longer but to hit price points and more life span did take a hit.

But compare what you pay for a 50 inch screen today and 5, 10 years ago. Amazing progress on the price.

Its a HL T5676S, and the tech just finished changing out the chip a few hours earlier today, the picture looks like new again!

Strange. I called Samsung today and explained the "white dot" problem and was told there was nothing Samsung could (would) do to repair my TV. What model do you have? I have the HL-T6756W which was purchased at Costco. Could it be that the repair applies only to certain DLP models but not to others? Any further information you can supply about how you got Samsung to agree to replace the chip at no cost would be most helpful. Thanks.

Well, they didn't ask where I purchased the set. It was actually easy, I didn't call expecting them to offer to fix it, I called them to explain my problem and see if they would confirm that it actually WAS the DMD chip that was faulty so I could replace it myself. I explained that I had the set for about three years and that it started happening just as my warranty expired and the operator at 1-800-SAMSUNG offered to send someone out for a free one-time fix. I would suggest that if you call and they deny offering you a free fix, maybe try a more aggressive approach, I saw someone on here mention that they were thinking of starting a class action lawsuit, try mentioning that. If worse comes to worse and you have to replace the chip yourself (they're about $160, MUCH cheaper than a new TV) rest assured that it doesn't look that difficult, I saw the repairman do it today in my home, you can find some videos on YouTube showing you how to do it, although I hope you don't have to. Good luck!

You were lucky or should I say you had the right model. I just called (11-21-12) and they would not cover any of the fix for my model HLT6187. I tried to talk them into covering just the chip but they insisted it was normal wear and tear. Maybe I should try contacting TI and see if they would cover the DMD chip seeing it's their product that is failing...

I have an HLT6187 with all the white dots, just talked to customer service and ECR and still said, sorry your set does not qualify. Even though it is doing the same thing, we determined that your particular model is not covered. Nice!!!

Not sure what to do at this point, I could replace the part and try it for $200, does anyone know this, was this an issue with the manufacturing of the part itself, i.e. if I replace it the new part should be improved and this should not happen again? Or should I expect it to happen again in a couple of years??

My dilemma is that it happens to be Black Friday, so should I just suck it up and buy a new TV and spend the extra money or just try to fix this faulty one.....decisions decisions...

Also got the white dots. Called 1(800) SAMSUNG (12/27/12) for my HL-T6176S and they will be changing my DMD chip at no cost. Scheduled on site repair for next week. Didn't expect it to be at easy. Just had to confirm my Model and Serial number. FYI, I bought the DLP over 5 years ago but hey are still covering my model.

I had a similar experience but not quite as fortunate. I have the same TV model (HL-T6756W) and when I called Samsung Service several weeks ago, I was told that Samsung would not take any responsibility whatsoever for fixing the TV. When I expressed my displeasure, they said I could write a letter to the president of Samsung Electronics which I did. The response was that they would pay for the replacement DMD chip but I would have to pay for the labor which, as it turned out. was $170. I agreed to that and the technician came the next day and replaced the chip in about 20 minutes. The TV now plays good as new and everyone who sees it raves about the picture. So, it seems that Samsung is footing the entire cost in some cases but not in others. Hard to figure.
