Auto switching between DTS and DD out in TV's media player

I have a Samsung LCD TV (the C650 series, 40", latest firmware). I have a hard disk with movies attached to the USB port, and I use the TV's built-in media player to play movies often, with the sound being output via optical out to my AV receiver (I don't use the TV's speakers at all). The media player can output dolby digital or DTS fine, and the recevier can auto detect the streams correctly. However, if I've set the sound output (via tools) to DD from one movie, then begin to watch something else encoded in DTS, it defaults to PCM. If I watch another DD movie, it's fine. I have an equal amount of stuff encoded in DD and DTS, so I have to switch pretty often.

What I don't understand is why the media player can't just auto-switch between DD and DTS output on the digital out? I always have to go to the tools menu and switch it manually. I believe this should be a very trivial thing to fix in a firmware update.

I like the TV, but a major reason I bought it because of the media player abilities, and this is a major annoyance.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue.

The audio signal will default to PCM, since that will support the audio output of various file types. Since the TV doesn't know which code is coming in, and the wrong (or an incompatible audio signal, resulting in no audio) setting would cause people to think that something is wrong with the television.

I'll be happy to pass your comments on to the appropriate department for review. I don't know if this is something that can be adjusted within the firmware.

Has something happened about it? I'm having the same problem and I must admit - it's annoying... It would be great if there was an option to "make" TV switch DTS <-> DD before switching to PCM...

Totally agree! I use a WD-TV mediaplayer which is connected directly to the amp as well. When I bought the TV, I figured I wouldn't need the WDTV any more, but this behavior is getting so annoying, I now use my WDTV again.

By the way: same issue exists on regular TV as well. HD-channels usually had DD5.1 output, but the TV always defaults to PCM on the SPDIF-output. Just st00pid. Make this configurable, just like my WDTV which has a setting for that as well.

Hi there

Thanks for this creating this thread and your response.

I fail to understand why the TV can't distinguish between the different audio types automatically. The media is being played by the TV's internal player, so it MUST know what video and audio codec to use for the media it is playing. How can it not know?

By identifying the audio codec type and automatically switching the SPDIF Output will be a great help.

Has Any Progress been made?

I am now in the same situation. Has any progress been made on this? It is a major annoyance for each file played to have to go to tools and select Dolby or DTS. Can't this be autodetected?

posted this in other forums, tried to contact samsung.
There are users out there who WANT to get DTS/DD without the need to manually select it every time.

This is one bool setting, please add it!!!!!!!!!
