Samsung forum: Samsung BDP-1600 wireless adapter alternatives?

Electronic retail isn't the same anymore. (I've worked retail for 10 years now). "Most people" Think they are techs or know alot about electronics. Like when LCD and Plasma TV's came to the market people didn't understand that: "HDTV Ready" really means...."This TV can have a HD picture but it needs some 3rd party tools to make it happen.... but it can do it."

But then again customers want a great pricing but never understand what companys have to cut to reduce the cost. IE: India based tech support, not including WIFI adapters. OR USB cables with printers. all stuff cut to reduced the price to meet customers price demands.

I bought the BD-C5500 a few weeks ago. I didn't realize that it was only "Ready" when I bought it, but I do admit that Walmart.com clearly stated that the LAN adapter wasn't included. Regardless, my entire network is wireless, and I do not have Ethernet installed to the areas I would need it, such as bedrooms, or the family room.

My solution: I use a Cisco Valet Plus router with stock firmware. I dug up my old Linksys WRT54g v8 router, flashed DD-WRT to it (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/How_To_Flash_the_WRT54Gv8), and followed these instructions TO A "T":

After setting my laptop back to AUTO IP and AUTO DNS, I successfully connected to my wireless network using the WRT54g. I then tried to use it with the Samsung BD-C5500 and it works flawlessly.

Although I am a Web Development student, I am not very knowledgable about networking at all. Though I took my time, I was able to successfully complete this task in about an hour.

Here is my set up, connecting both a Samsung LCD 650 series TV and a Samsung P-1600 DVD player:
Both unites are connected via Ethernet to an Ethernet switch. The Swtich is connected to an Apple Airport Express (in bridge mode), which wireless is connected to the Apple Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is the main router, connected to the Cable Modem.
Everything works like a charm.

I could have used a second router and skipped the Ethernet switch, but wanted Airport to Airport, and the price of the Express (used) and the switch combined was a good deal, and worth the ease of keeping is all Apple.

I bought a Samsung LN52B750 in May of last year the color is great the sound is good I was wondering about the Wireless adapter! Why is the adapter included with the Blue ray player, but not the TV I play my ps3 on the TV so I watch my Blue rays on that. Now that I think about it I think this TV was a waste of money if I have to dump more money into it just to get the Full potential out of it. And I probably wont be purchasing anymore Samsung devices. For future reference Samsung should sell their customers a device that they can get 100% use out of once plugged in. like I said I love the color on the games and movies but Feel a little cheated.

I just purchased my LN46C650 LCD. I'm in the same situation where I need a wireless adapter to hook up my system. Could you send me a Wireless Linkstick as well?

The Samsung Wireless N adapter is probably the easiest route, however there are alternatives.... here are options to look into:

1. Wireless adapters (that can convert any device with an ethernet port into a wireless device)... here is an example from linksys (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124126&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction&AID=10440897&PID=404255&SID=130348). Basically you connect it to your Blu-ray player's ethernet port, so that your blu-ray player communicates with it like any Ethernet connection, and it converts it to a wireless signal. The caveat is that you will need to hook it to a PC at first to get it configured to know how to connect to your wireless network. This is approx $25 on newegg currently.

2. Install a wireless bridge near your blu-ray player... will work similar to #1, but can have more devices connecting through it... it basically becomes another access point (need one that has an ethernet port), and it can relay all signals flowing into it onwards to the main wireless router.

3. There are several routers out there that can be "flashed" with alternative firmwares to get them to be more flexible. In this case, if you have an old router sitting around your home (i.e. Linksys WRT54G or WRT54G2), you could flash it with something like OpenWRT (which takes a little time) and then use instructions on their website to configure it into a wireless bridge. Then put an ethernet connection between it and your blu-ray player.... voila! This is my solution with my BD-P1600 at home, and works great!

I ordered the WIS09ABGN and can't get it to work on my BD-p1600 blu ray player. It recognizes my wireless network, but it will not connect. I was told this is the one I needed for this blu ray player, but when I plug in both model numbers on your website, it says they are not compatible. Should I belive the Samsung tech I spoke to or the website? I need some answers here! I am getting ready to throw this POS out the window and buy a Panasonic!

You can use any wireless repeater with a network cable.

Here is how I did it.
I bought a cheap wireless router from buy.com that has repeater capability. $26 free shipping not sales tax.
Many of the wireless routers can be used as a repeater.

I setup the new wireless router as a repeater per its instructions.
The put it behind my samsung 1600 and connected it with a short cat5 cable to the RJ45 Jack on the 1600.

Setup the 1600 to use a network cable not wireless. You are done.

Works perfect and I also have extended the range of my wi-fi network as a free bonus. Also I have extra RJ45 network jack available on the new router/repeater for what ever I may want to add in that room.

I agree. I smacked myself in the head... duhhhh! I have a spare router. Can't wait to try the option. I'll keep my fingers crossed and post back when I can watch Netflix from my tv without tripping over cables.

Using the Rosewill dongle now with my BD-P1590 without issues. It is delivered with a flexible USB extender to attach to the rear USB port. Works in both USB ports though.

Followed the Samsung onscreen instructions and it connected to my wireless network quickly without any issues.
(Time Warner Cable/Motorola Surfboard modem ---> Linksys WRT54GS wireless router ----> Rosewill--->BDP1590 USB port)

I bought this player partly for its online functions. One little "gotcha" in my opinion is all the online services splashed all over the box - big logo's, big print - when the player is "online ready" (which the box does state in a far less splashy manner). They don't tell you on the box that you have to buy an $80 adapter to use any of those services they advertise. Well, they do tell you that you need an adapter to go online. Read the fine print on the side of the box. Not deceptive at all, these guys - right....

To answer your question: I've done considerable research on this and learned that Samsung intentionally built their recorders so you are REQUIRED to purchase THEIR online adapter. Proprietary. "For your protection," of course, since they can't warranty adapters from other mfr's. Yeah, that'll protect you - and make them a nice little guaranteed profit. Just by coincidence, I'm sure.

Anyway, now that you've purchased their player that handles online services, they gotcha. No online services for you unless you spend yet another $80 for THEIR adapter. No word on why theirs is so expensive compared to other wireless-g adapters. Well, maybe one word: Gotcha!

I had an old TrendNet ABplus bridge/access adapter. I hooked it up to my laptop via Ethernet and put it in access adapter mode. Searched for access points and found my router. Put my security key in. Set it to automatically assigned ip address. Unplugged it and plugged it to the back of my BD-P1600 via Ethernet and set it to automatically assign ip within setup menu. Works great. You can probably find these or something similar online. Search for wireless bridge/adapter.

I just purchased a brand new Samsung dongle on eBay for $44.60 plus $5 shipping. Coming from China the counterfeit capital of the world I'm pretty sure Samsung will not get a dime from this transaction LOL. Use PayPal to pay and your purchase is financially safe.

I've used other wireless bridges. And those wifi bridges were not made by Samsung
