WiseLink only supports USB-MSC, that is Mass Storage Class devices, such as thumb drives and Flash Card Readers.
The iPod Nano falls under this category.
The iPod iTouch/iPhone units do not.
Hope that helps explain why it won't work.

The purpose was to allow people to transfer their pictures, audio files and some video files to the television via USB thumbdrives.
The term "bug" suggests that there is an incompatibility within the boundaries of the limitations; in this case, a MSC device. It's not a bug or a mistake, since WiseLink does do what it was intended to do.
If the iPod Nano wasn't a Fat16/32 formatted MSC-type drive, even that wouldn't work. Luckily, it is and ended up being compatible.
There should be other solutions to playing your music through your television from your iTouch if that's really what you're aiming to do. If it is, let me know, and maybe we can come up with a solution together.

As I explained above, it's not going to work through WiseLink because the iTouch is beyond a MCS. You could run the audio jack out to a home theatre system.
It seems to me that using the television speakers with no picture is not a very workable option. Attaching it from 3.5mm to RCA into an existing Home Theatre system is probably your best bet.
If you absolutely must have it run through the television speakers, I might suggest running a male 3.5mm on each side to the back of the PC input (the input is next to it), and then turn the television to the PC mode. I can't confirm that this will work without a picture signal, but it might be worth a shot.

Sorry about that.
It would be a male-to-male connector that would fit in the headphone jack of your iTouch and the back input of the television. Again, I'm not sure that's a positive solution, but it's worth a shot. If you'd like, I can get a definite answer on Monday.

Ipod video

Would it make a difference if the Ipod was in a docking station attached via composit AV wires? I'm considering buying this tv and my wife is wondering if her downloaded Ipod videos can be played on it. The ad for the TV mentions Wiselink in the description for the USB port, but that shouldn't matter if it's hooked up to the AV, right?

You are correct.
The AV inputs run an analog signal. Wiselink decodes digital files. Keep in mind that the s picture quality from an iPod may be less than ideal, but if you can borrow your wife's dock and iPod and take it over to your favorite retailer and try it out, you'll know what to expect.
I always recommend that anyway. I'm sure the retailers aren't thrilled with my suggestion, but you should know what to expect.

HI.. I have the LN52A850. It is great. But, I don't understand wiselink. What is MSC? Where is a list of such devices. Isn't my Macbook Pro hard drive an MSC device. Why can't I attach a stand alone hard drive with a USB connector?
My iphone was recognized. So...if I had an mp3 file on it, couldn't I play it. Also, with photos...if it was a JPEG folder wouldn't I be able to see it? What about Apple TV (the small white box); if it has a USB connector can't I see it.
The bottom line is that I want to figure out how I can figure out what are and are not MSC divices.

Mass Storage Class devices, is essentially what an MSC is.
Thumbdrives are a good example, and even small hard-drives can be considered MSC devices.
Some are supported, as per the manual specifications. Others are not. Here is Wiki-link explaining some of the technology. That said, Wiki being Wiki, it's neither difinitive or necessarily accurate beyond what effort and expertise went into it, but provides a general idea.

The iPhone and iTouch have DRM limitations placed on there by Apple. For that matter, Gen-4 Nanos and Gen-4 Classics (to the best of my knowledge) also may not be able to play. Apple will neither confirm or deny why, and it's better to let them explain if they wish to.
If you transfer your data to a thumbdrive, you should get the ability to play the files that are specified in the manual.

Per your post and Samsung specs, I know that Wiselink only supports MSC devices. That given, is there any way to configure a standard external HDD to appear as a MSC device to Wiselink?

Formatting it in Fat32 ought to do the trick. Also, I would expiriment with no folders at first, and then branch to see if folders would work for your particular application.

Formating my external HDD to FAT32 did not work. Shortly after plugging it in and selecting Wiselink, the TV began to power cycle. Your suggestion to try just one folder might have done it. Is it possible the Wiselink memory is too small to read all the contents of the drive, causing the TV CPU to crash?
Not only that, but it scrambled the HDD, requiring it to be reformatted (again). (this external HDD works fine on my other-brand 42" LCD TV USB port)
Can the MSC limitation (if that's what it is) be addressed in the next firmware release?

It may be that the limited memory inside the television can read only so much. How many files were you trying to access on the drive?

This is my main media backup drive: 8000 music , 5,000 photo, and some video files in many folders. I have not tried using a single folder with limited files because this would not meet my needs.
I do not find the Wiselink Photo user interface well designed. It appears to require that the TV access and analyse every file on a drive, then serve them out in categories that are not very useful such as Color and Composition(?). The Folder category displays them all on the same line, so you have to step through one at a time until the folder you want finally appears. NOT convenient.
In contrast, my DVD player has a USB port that works fine with the drive and provides a simple folder-tree structure. I will have to use this method unless Samsung addresses this and other Wiselink limitations in a firmware update. Should I hold my breath?
Again, thank you for your attention. This speaks very well of Samsung as opposed to other manufacturers.

The drive, as it is, was likely intended to be compatible with many drives, including thumbdrives, some mp3 players and other mass storage devices. I'm not sure the engineers had the number of songs and photos you have in mind with the current design.
For what it's worth, as of this morning, I have passed that information to our engineers. However, as the new models are coming out, I would make the assumption that this feature is likely not going to be added. However, it's a good one, and I believe it merits consideration.
I do believe in being straighforward in saying that I don't believe it will happen, but I do believe that this merits a discussion to see.
Which DVD player has the feature that works better? I'd like to see what that does compared to what the WiseLink does and further this information.

I BOUGHT THE 550 SERIES PLASMA TO WATCH SLIDE SHOWS OF MY PICTURES WITH MUSIC (MUCH LIKE THE $99 DIGITAL PICTURE FRAMES DO, BUT IN 1080 SPLENDOR.) I FIND IT WORKS WELL ENOUGH TO KEEP ME INTRIGUED, BUT IS SLOW AND CUMBERSOME.
COULD YOU POSSIBLY DESCRIBE JUST WHAT IS HAPPENING WHEN YOU INSERT A FLASH DRIVE AND START THE SLIDE SHOW? WHAT WOULD BE THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO SAVE .jpgs (FILE SIZE TO MAXIMIZE QUALITY vs. SPEED.) IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW LARGE THE FILE/FOLDER/FLASHDRIVE CAN BE? ARE THE THUMBNAILS STORED "IN THE TV," AND IF SO, IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE NUMBER IT CAN HOLD?
IT WOULD BE NICE IF THERE WAS A BETTER WAY OF ORGANIZATION LIKE WINDOWS EXPLORER TO ACCESS AND SELECT THE PHOTOS/SONGS YOU'D LIKE TO USE FOR A PARTICULAR SLIDESHOW.
GUESS WHAT I'M REALLY LOOKING FOR IS A WISELINK TUTORIAL. THE MANUAL IS REPETITIVE AND CONFUSING.

i purchased a samsung 42 hd tv has wiselink and i understand it doesnt support ipod touch file system except the pictures, when will samsung release a firmware update to support them?
also i was wondering i purchased this tv from fry's and it was a display model so it seems that it doesnt save any of my settings always reverts back. is there anyway i can update the tv's firmware to a version that will save my settings.

Your TV is still in Shop mode. Run the plug-and-play to set it up for Home use. (There will also be a setting in the Menus - see your User Guide)
