alternative to google groups or sourceforge lists.

I am looking for an email list program that will allow me to do the following:

1. allow users to send an email to xyz@xyzcomp.com and have it broadcast to those on the list (like sourceforge lists), any registered user could send messages.

2. (optional) allow users to register via email by sending a message with the word "subscribe" to xyz@xyzcomp.com and alternatively unsubscribe.

I have looked at web apps like google groups and sourceforge but I would like to use a custom address as shown above. if anyone knows how to modify or alias google groups or sourceforge that would be great.

I have also looked at other open source software like phplist which works only as a newsletter subscription app as well as poMMo.

I am interested in gnu mailman, but I do not have a server I can dedicate to the list (except a linux godaddy host).

any ideas?

The main thing I am looking for is I would like to be able to alias to a company email address instead of having to use one @googlegroups etc.

Sorry but of course it can be done. Nothing stops us here. My thoughts are how much time and maybe hosting costs you could rack up.

This is why I would consider the usuals rather than creating something new.

Alternative to Mailman and Google Groups

You could consider OnlineGroups.Net or its open source engine GroupServer.

GroupServer http://groupserver.org is an open source web-based mailing list manager. It allows you to run a mailing lists site with a web interface something like that of Google Groups. Being open source, however, it allows a high level of control over implementation and customisation. Being a sophisticated system, however, running a GroupServer instance requires decent system admin experience.

An easier way to use GroupServer is via the hosted service at OnlineGroups.Net http://onlinegroups.net, where you can start a free site and then start free public online groups. It is free to use a custom domain with OnlineGroups.Net, so you can use your domain for group email address.
