How do I figure which "symbol set" I have on my computer?

Hi John and all readers!
Very strange occurrence just recently. Running Vista on an HP desk top never had a problem printing.
Yesterday I had need to print out an email I had written two weeks ago. On screen everything looks exactly as it was typed - when I printed it out (Epson Artisan 835 inkjet) all the single and double quotation marks in my email print out appearing as the same 4 symbols. They are 1)a lower case a with an inverted v over it followed by 2)the Euro symbol followed by 3&4) connected lower case o and e. Every time. Making me banana's!!
All I can figure out is that somehow I changed a symbol set or something! My problem is I don't know where to start looking or how to diagnose where I gotta go to change things.
Please help me.
