Dell Inspiron Boot Problem

My wife's Dell Inspiron 1420 got so hot that the overheat message appeared. I cleaned the heat sink, and that fixed the heat problem. Then I deleted all her files, and ran defrag a few times, and removed some programs from the boot file. I used it to run PPT, with great success - fast, cool, etc. Then I closed the lid and left it in sleep mode all night. The next morning it would not boot, except in safe mode. Then I reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium, hoping this would resolve things. Now the computer will not boot in any mode. I ran all the diagnostics, and all checked OK. When it starts to boot I get a blue screen that briefly shows a few lines that tell what is happening, but this is not visible long enough to read it. How do I get it to freeeze at that point, so I can read it? Any suggestions on how to get it to boot up?
