I bought a new hard drive around 8 months ago. It's a Seagate ST2000DL003 with 2 TB of space. When I right click on the C Drive, it says 1.1 TB are being used, but when I actually go into the hard drive and select everything there (including the hidden and system files), it says I have only used 200 GB. I searched for why this could be happening, and the common answer I got was that my hard drive was being consumed by system restore points. Makes sense, or it would if I had that feature turned on. Even though it doesn't make sense, I did the command for checking your shadow copies, and as I thought, I don't have any, or at least it didn't say I had any.
I am running 64 bit Vista, and have an HP A6757c computer. I have only 1 partition and regularly defrag it. I don't run error check very often, but running it did not help.
What is causing this, and how can I fix it?

Before you said that, I didn't check that folder; well I did, but without access, it said it had 0 bytes of data. I went into the folder and gave myself permission to view the files, and there was generally nothing there. It's only taking up 136 bytes.

There are other areas to cover such as the difference of BINARY BYTES versus DECIMAL BYTES. That's about 7% and you are looking for a lot more.
Time to boot any of the LiveCDs such as UBUNTU and explore some more. No install needed.

I could have told you it wasn't right. That's my problem. I've never ran Ubuntu, so that'll be interesting. Some specifics would've been nice, but I guess I'll figure it out.

Boot the CD, double click or open some file explorer and click around like you do in Windows. Should be up and clicking in about 5 minutes. No tutorial is usually needed.

I booted up Ubuntu, and System Volume Information was still empty. Ubuntu seems to be better about finding where my space is going, but not by much. If I select everything in the C drive, it says I have taken up more than it did in Windows (it went up to 500 GB before I stopped it, as it was taking a long time). But when I go to each individual folder, nothing seems out of place. My documents has 100GB and my program folders have 100 GB. Windows has around 20 GB and nothing else has more than 1 GB. I checked the disk visualization program that comes with Ubuntu, but it wasn't helpful.
There's more to research.

Look up TREESIZE FREE and see what folder is 800GB.
