Vista Windows Explore Issue

I have an external hard drive that I use for back-up of all my desktop files. Now, when I turn on the external drive and go into "Explore" in Windows Vista to drag & drop files, "Explore" locks up. If I turn off the external drive or unplug the USB connection, "Explore" then is operational again. I wonder what is causing this problem all of a sudden and how to fix?

You could have some bad sectors

I'd run chkdsk and let it check for and attempt repair of any bad sectors it finds. Bear in mind that depending on the size of the drive, it could run for several hours.

Thank you for the suggestion, wpgwpg. My external hard drive had been connected to the desktop through a USB Hub. I unplugged it from there and plugged it in to a USB port on the desktop. It then worked fine happy Interesting that one of my printers still works through the hub, but the external hard drive won't. Maybe it's just constricted too much in the amt of data it can handle.

You can't use hubs with external HDs

External HDs have to be connected directly into the computer due to timing. They transfer a lot of data at high speed, and the timing delays through are enough to cause problems. I think that's documented in what comes with most, if not all these. I'm glad you figured this out and got it working.
