Gateway Laptop Freezes on start-up, OK in safe-mode

Pretty much title explains it. Its my sister's computer and the problem started a long time ago and she now tells me so I'm attempting to fix it for her, if I can... So I have no idea what would have triggered this problem. She has many junk programs on it, and if possible would not mind wiping everything and start clean. Though we do not have an window disks, no point set for system restore. I've explored the computer in safe mode hoping for some magical tool to eliminate all unnecessary programs but my efforts were to no avail. I now resort to internet for help, forums, so far I have not found any answers. So this is were I am at now, on a forum posting the problem. I hope I could get some assistance, it would be greatly appreciated!

Before you do anything. Back it up.

I can use CLONEZILLA and an external USB drive to back up the system so we can move on.

Then you can, in safe mode use MSCONFIG to turn off start up items one by one until you find it.

Cause? Could be a virus/pest/malware or something as silly as accepting a driver from Microsoft.

Gateway still sells restore media for Vista or you get it from a download they tell you about such as

Repair Windows is never a sure thing. That's why we backup and make plans for the disasters.

Frozen before it can back up

I attempted to back it up but the computer freezes before it can even attempt to back up...

Try the backup noted at the next link.

There is no reason to lose your files. Even if you have to put the drive on or into another PC.
