How can I securely wipe my laptop for sale?

I've been looking up tutorials on this but I am still clueless as most simply recommend programs designed to wipe the Hard drive and I have had no success using these.
I tried KillDisk first but although I selected 'wipe' and 'kill' on all the selectable files nothing seemed to happen. I tried rebooting my computer but it loaded as usual and my files were still perfectly visible. Does the software only worked in the full/purchased version?
Then I tried DBAN, burning the ISO program to a disk and then trying to reboot from the disk, as directed. But the computer showed up the message that it was booting from the disk and then stayed on that initial screen. Nothing happened.
Then I read a tutorial which said I could simply wipe my computer by accessing the command prompt using my recovery disks but I can only assume that I misread the instructions because I was never given that option during recovery.
The reformat went fine but now I'm not sure if I'll need to do it again anyway once the files are truly and securely wiped. Is it still possible to wipe them properly after a reboot and what, please, is a simple way to do this?
