I have run "windows 8 upgrade assistant" on my Vista home premium and it passed the compatibility test and listed the $39.90 upgrade purchase.I presently have a very stable system and wondering what are the odds of this upgrade going smoothly?

But then again, folk only bring me their troubles so that's why I don't think highly of this.

-> If you were able to go back with your backups then you're only out 40 bucks and a day or 2 of your time.

Robert thx for your comments and I have one more question from the Cnet article "preparing for W8 upgrade".If I do a complete backup to an external hard drive is it necessary to "clone" my existing system with one of the recommended programs.Can this "clone" be done to an external HD?

Depends on what you mean with a "complete backup". I find an image made with Acronis True Image or Clonezilla a complete backup that can be used to restore the system to a previous state. But you might mean something else.

Both those are great. Clonezilla is free but some are put off by the old style menu system. I'm finding some users that if there is no icon they can't use it. Clonezilla's feature to save a complete system to a folder on some external has saved me a few times.
