How to format c on a laptop running Vista

I've attempted to format c from c prompt within Vista - I was pretty sure this might not work - and it did not.
I've also attempted to boot laptop with Windows XP cd and erase, format and reinstall software there, I received an error that the hard disk was not found once the option was selected to install Windows XP. Very odd.

I can boot a GPARTED (see google) and format that drive. However this means the drive is formatted and nothing more. No files, no Windows, etc.

Are you sure you want that?

I did - until I found out the hardrive is corrupt

since last night, I've been cleaning the laptop and running diags and have since found out that the drive is corrupt -= the owner is lucky, he can use it until it craps out for now wink Thanks for the answer I may need to use it in the future
