Windows Vista forum: Reliability Monitor Not Functioning

I've never used this tool before.

I'm on Win 7 and I had to go through hoops to see it as it isn't in the usual Management Console, but I found it in the Action Center under Maintenance.

What can you tell us about your system, make and model first, then specs, eg what storage drives are you using, is this a self-build? Is this Vista retail, or an upgrade from XP?

Do you have any underlying problems on this machine?

The Reliability Monitor seems to be a data gatherer from other consoles, like the Event Viewer, so do you have any problems with accessing that? I have problems accessing my Disk Management console on occasion when it sticks on 'Connecting to Virtual Disk Service". At those times I close it down and try later. But with that I know the problem is related to Intel's RST and my hard drive setup.

So what more can you tell us?

Mark here is a bit of a system summary for you .. Acer aspire e380,amd athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 4200, 2gb ram,Vista home premium sp2,retail,using c drive only.No other sytem problems.Windows update kb2305430 created all kinds of havoc which included the reliability monitor but I removed it and solved the problem this was like 2yrs ago.I now have the present problem that reliability monitor does not run on it's own although it does respond when i run racagent.Hope this gives you bit of an insight.p.s. I can access event viewer task sch. eveything looks normal and is enabled.

But after 2 years or so it would be hoped that the issue and your steps to solve them would have sorted that.

It is strange that this works when you run RACAgent, but that might still point to a Task Scheduler problem.

I can only offer links to other forums where similar problems have been stated, and see if any of the solutions there work for you.

Mark thx for all your research.I had went through all these items and the directions regarding the kb2305430 did solve it at the time.Something you alluded to and I think I will turn my attention to is my "task scheduler" being that racagent will work on a manual basis.Should you be able to shed any more light on this matter I would appreciate it.

if there was a Service involved which had been changed from Automatic to Manual or Disabled, but there is no Service for RACAgent.

But "The RACAgent scheduled task runs by default after the operating system is installed. If it is disabled, it must be enabled manually from the Task Scheduler snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC)".

So, I wonder if your RACAgent Scheduled Task has been disabled. If so, you need to start the scheduled task again.

which you can try first, or if that fails, try Amrita's 2nd option in his own post. Follow his directions carefully.

Mark thx for sticking with me on this one.In task sheduler everything looks normal with rac being enabled etc. however you mentioned about snap-ins and you might be onto something here.In mmc\snap-ins "reliability monitor" is listed in the left pane along with many others.I have never added or removed a snap-in on this pc from day one and yet my RM did work.Being I am not familar with these I just wanted to confirm that I should proceed with "add" reliability monitor.

I was hoping you would have become your own expert by now because I left my comfort zone some time ago!

The trouble is in Windows 7 RM is available from the Control Panel > Security > Action Center > Maintenance, and is not available in Computer Management. By design I assume. So it is something I rarely use and have no knowledge of.

I think you should go for it and add the RM. I wonder if it will be that simple though, but good luck.

Mark I added the respective snap-in but there was no change to the operation.I will be gone for couple wks will report back on my return.
