Windows Back Up and Restore doesn't backup

I have been backing up to an external hard drive for months and I received messages that the backup was successful, but when my pc crashed, I couldn't recover the files. I browsed the external drive and found no recent files. Are they hidden? What is going on?

I have Vista home premium.

Please help

It's a common failure.

And why we suggest 2 backups using different methods. Given so little detail all I can offer is that I've seen this too often. It's why I never use Microsoft's backup software.
